Prince of Songkla University was established in 1967 as the first university in southern Thailand, providing academic service to both regional communities and industries. It consists of 5 campuses with more than 2,000 faculty members instructing 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students. It is one of the leading research universities in Thailand which is internationally recognized by academia and industry. Its mission are to encourage its people to create value out of their research work by producing tangible innovation, to engage in transferring knowledge and technology to the community, and more importantly to produce graduates who are knowledgeable and competent in their profession. PSU also currently serves as a centre for human resources development for surrounding major agricultural industries, e.g., rubber, rubberwood, seafood and palm oil.

The Department of Industrial Engineering operated under the Faculty of Engineering, Prince of Songkla University has prioritized its mission on educating students in both undergraduate and graduate programs to become a professional in the field of industrial engineering. It now offers 3 graduate programs: industrial and systems engineering, logistics engineering, and industrial management, where the last one is for the applicants with years of industrial experiences. There are 22 faculty members who are specialized in different areas of industrial engineering, e.g., manufacturing and materials technology, logistics management, and ergonomics. The department has very close connections with the surrounding industries; it actively involves in a number of academic service projects supported by both public and private sectors.
